Field trips to River Chess and Milton Keynes for GCSE students

Geography students had the opportunity to attend two field trips this week as part of their Geography GCSE studies. On one trip, the students visited the Chess Valley to investigate how the river changes along the stretch of the River Chess. They also looked at the risk of flooding in the area. The students conducted lots of primary fieldwork aided by staff of the Amersham Field Studies Centre, which included looking at the bed load, cross sectional area and the velocity of the river. Students studied these factors making conclusions as they moved along the river about the social, economic and environmental impacts that would occur if there were to be a flood.

On the second trip to Milton Keynes, students were investigating the ways in which the quality of life and levels of deprivation vary across different parts of the city. The students also had an opportunity to attend a talk at the offices of PwC,  explaining the reasons why Milton Keynes is such an important location for their business.

These studies contribute to a component for the students’ GCSE examination, for which they need to discuss fieldwork processes, analyse fieldwork data and discuss limitations.

The Field Studies Council, FSC, is an environmental education charity providing informative and opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to discover, explore, and understand the environment.
