German Immersion Trip 2024

32 Year 10 students, together with Mrs Fern, Mr Farmer and our German Language Assistant Ina Stambusch, spent the first week of December in Berlin. We had a fabulous time in an action-packed 5 days. We had already exchanged emails with pen pals at the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart-Schule and we met up with them several times during the week, both at the school (which is about 12 km to the east of the city) and in central Berlin. After meeting them face to face, we had a tour of the school, shadowed lessons and were given lunch which had been cooked by the students (some of us liked this more than others!). We went bowling with them in central Berlin and had hot chocolate and cake in a typical German cafe. It was a really good opportunity to practise our speaking skills and on the last day we had a bi-lingual quiz in teams with our partners. This included the Playdough challenge, when we had to make models of various things including the Brandenburg Gate!

As well as the activities with our partner school, we had lots of opportunities to learn about the history of Berlin. We went up the famous TV tower on our first day, and later in the week had a walking tour of central Berlin, saw parts of the famous Berlin Wall and went to the Reichstag building to visit the famous dome designed by Sir Norman Foster. Our guide Maria had lots of stories and she made everything really interesting.

We had plenty of shopping opportunities, including several Christmas markets, the Mall of Berlin, a few trips to the supermarket and at Alexanderplatz but the highlight was probably the Ritter Sport chocolate shop. Chocolate featured quite often during this trip, as the German school gave us a lot of it too! We had the chance to try lots of German food, including Currywurst, Schnitzel and Apfelstrudel as well as lots of goodies which we bought during the week.

It was a really fun trip and we are already looking forward to running it again in December 2025!
