St Clement Danes is Awarded the Silver Equalities Award

We are delighted to have been awarded the Silver Equalities Award by Equaliteach following a vigorous audit process. The award was designed by a team of equality and education experts to help enable schools to fulfil their statutory duties to eliminate discrimination, promote community cohesion, safeguard children and advance equality of opportunity. The Silver Award recognises ‘strong foundations to ensure that equality and diversity practice flows through all aspects of the school.’ In the process of this audit we have set up both a Student Diversity Society and a Staff Working Party and focused on both exploring diversity and how we can be more inclusive as a school community. Whilst we are thrilled to have achieved the Silver award, we know that our efforts, must and will, continue.

The audit was led by Assistant Headteacher Ms Doyle and it proved a useful evaluation of the key strengths of the school and areas that could be further developed. For example, in light of the audit we have reviewed some of our policies and put in place some changes including a diversity calendar, expanded our assembly programme, begun a review of our curriculum and the opportunities we are able to deliver. Part of our Year 11 programme (post-assessment), includes workshops on rejecting racism, gender inequality and further awareness of mental health. We have also adjusted our Equalities Objectives and worked with the Danes Educational Trust in thinking about our core values.

Movements such as Black Lives Matter and Everyone’s Invited highlight the need for schools to be mindful about the culture and ethos they wish to foster and our responsibility towards our students. We are very aware that both our students and staff wish to be active in realising opportunity, respect and care for all. To this end, we will continue to broaden our discussions and endeavour to develop our efforts in challenging inequality and ensuring we encourage critical thinking and engagement with wider issues outside of our curriculum.
